EIGHT WEEKS AFTER CYCLONE IDAI: MAKING CSR TANGIBLE IN AFFECTED AREAS

Following the severe floods in Chimanimani, Chipinge and Masvingo low lying areas there has been massive destruction of infrastructure in the region with Manicaland Districts of Chipinge and Chimanimani being the most affected and this resulted in several deaths, destruction of livelihoods and properties.

 

Tropical Cyclone Idai hit eastern Zimbabwe with heavy rains and strong winds on 15-16 March 2019. Provinces most impacted were Manicaland and Masvingo, where floods and landslides caused by the Cyclone caused severe damage on the affected populations. An estimated 270,000 people have been affected by flooding and need humanitarian assistance in the seven districts—Chipinge, Chimanimani, Buhera, Bikita, Mutare, Gutu, and Chiredzi. Most people affected are in Chipinge (122,000) and Chimanimani (115,000) districts (OCHA Situation Report 1, 27 March 2019).

 

The Company on its part mobilised immediate food handouts (mealie-meal), beverages for service personnel and blankets worth RTGS$$50 000 and pledged a total of RTGS$$1,5million towards the ongoing efforts to deal with this emergency. The funds pledged were utilised through specific projects as agreed with the Civil Protection Unit and/or channelled through emergency relief partners mainly Red Cross Zimbabwe, Goal Zimbabwe and World Vision International.
